Theoretische filosofie omvat de filosofie van de logica en de semantiek, wetenschapsfilosofie en filosofie van de geest en conitie.
De specialisatie Theoretische filosofie behandelt alle aspecten van de menselijke kennis in de breedste zin van het woord. Wie weet? Hoe weten we? Waarover weten we? De filosofische disciplines epistemologie, logica, metafysica, wetenschapsfilosofie en filosofie van de geest behandelen de verschillende aspecten van dege vragen. Iedere discipline is vertegenwoordigd door analytisch georiënteerde docenten in het Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte.

In accordance with Leiden tradition and policy, there is a strong link between systematic philosophy and the history of philosophy. Indeed, all philosophy is to some extent concerned with conceptual architecture, but the philosophical edifice is of a venerable age and it is often only possible to unravel conceptual architecture on the basis of conceptual archaeology. Thus, the programme is particularly strong in the Philosophy and History of Science and in the Philosophy and Modern History of Logic, as well as in the Philosophy of Constructive Mathematics.
The teaching usually finds place in small-scale seminars and often with international participation. As a rule, examination is by means of student essays. The staff members are active internationally, including in the organisation of conferences. Thus Leiden in recent years has been host to several workshops within the field of Theoretical Philosophy and its modern history, for instance on Frege, on Truth, on Rationality and the Choice of Logic as well as the Philosophy of Isaac Newton.
