In de masterspecialisatie Theoretical Linguistics and Cognition richt je je op het bestuderen van de complexe opbouw van niet-kunstmatige talen, van de syntactische structuur, tot de wijze waarop mensen taal verwerken en produceren. Het eenjarige programma biedt je de kans om diepgaande cursussen te volgen op alle terreinen van formele grammatica – syntaxis, semantiek, fonologie – net zoals onderzoeksbenaderingen tot taal, taalverwerving, klinische taalkunde, en het in kaart brengen van spraak en taal. Alle colleges zijn gebaseerd op, of afgeleid van – praktisch taalkundig onderzoek uitgevoerd door het Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), een van de grootste taalkundige instituten binnen Nederland.

In this programme you can focus on two research areas:

  • Clinical and Experimental Linguistics, the exact identification of language and speech behaviour, will teach you how to define congenital or acquired linguistic disorders. Methods of experimental linguistic research are essential in this track.
  • Theoretical linguistics, which involves the in-depth study of syntactic, phonological or semantic topics. You will explore the formal structures of linguistic phenomena and the way they reveal the human knowledge of language and the cognitive aspects of grammar.

“De master Linguistics in Leiden is een master in formele linguïstiek. We hebben het programma zo ontworpen dat studenten kunnen kiezen voor verschillende specialisaties (bijvoorbeeld syntax, semantiek, fonetiek, klinische linguïstiek). Al onze docenten zijn toegewijde onderzoekers, internationaal zeer vooraanstaand. Studenten die deelnemen aan ons programma krijgen de kans om te leren van, maar ook te werken met deze onderzoekers.

Leiden heeft een bijzondere Chinese bibliotheek, vergelijkbaar met de Yen-Ching Library aan Harvard University. Voor iedereen die wil werken in het vakgebied van de Chinese linguïstiek is dit een fantastische plek. Verder bestaan er formele uitwisselingsverbanden met McGill University (Canada) en Université de Nantes, en informele contacten met universiteiten wereldwijd (de Verenigde Staten incluis). Er zijn regelmatig colloquia en workshops waarvoor masterstudenten van harte worden uitgenodigd.

Linguistics maakt nu onderdeel uit van het Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition, waar veel grensverleggend interdisciplinair onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd. Leiden is nu ‘the place to be’. Mijn specialiteit binnen de linguïstiek is vergelijkende syntax. Ik vergelijk talen binnen een talengroep, zoals Chinese- en Bantu talen, en doe daarnaast ook vergelijkend onderzoek tussen talenfamilies, zoals de Griekse, Chinese, Romaanse en Bantu.”
