Organisation
Leiden Institute of Physics
The Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) is a leading institute of physics in the world. Physics research at Leiden University is concentrated in the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory, the Huygens Laboratory, and the Institute Lorentz for Theoretical Physics. The Institute is located next to the other Science Institutes of the university, a situation that favours interdisciplinary research projects. International research experience is facilitated through European networks.
Most of the Master of Science graduates continue with a PhD project in LION or elsewhere. Strong programmes exist in condensed matter physics, surface physics, theoretical physics, quantum optics and quantum information, biological and molecular physics. In addition, an exciting novel research programme has been started in the physics of life sciences. It is part of the Bioscience Initiative of Leiden University, through which frequent contacts exist with molecular biologists and chemists.
