“Competence in carrying out high-quality public administration research is indispensable, if we want to fully understand and be able to change society.”
“Public Administration is a very dynamic and interesting field of research. Important societal challenges are often linked to questions about public policy and public management. As an example: how can we reform the public sector in such a way that cuts can be made while at the same time ensuring that citizens remain satisfied with the solutions to important social issues? In what way can public managers improve the quality of service provided by their organizations? But also: how can we bring the Euro crisis under control?
Public Administration at Leiden University has a strong research profile, with internationally renowned researchers. In the research master programme you will discuss with the professors the state of the art of academic research, often also research in which professors are involved themselves. In this way we create a research community in which scientific debate plays a crucial role. You will be trained in the analytical skills required to translate complex issues into relevant and feasible research questions and testable scientific hypotheses and receive training in various research methods and techniques. The skills thus acquired are vital for your future research-oriented career, whether you decide to continue in academia as a PhD candidate, to work for a renowned research institution such as the Netherlands Institute for Social Research, or to become a consultant.
