De masterspecialisatie Physics and Science Communication and Society werkt nauw samen met de masterspecialisatie ‘Journalistiek & Nieuwe Media’ van de masteropleiding Nederlandse taal & cultuur.

Programme

The physics component of the programme consists of courses to be selected in correspondence with the research topic, and a research project in one of the research groups of the Leiden Institute of Physics ( LION), including a master’s thesis and an oral presentation. The Physics component can be extended by a maximum of 20 EC by extending the research component or by doing extra physics master courses. The choices for courses and research project will be made in concert with a supervisor.

The communication-related part of the specialisation consists of a compulsory and an optional part.

  • Compulory part: the course Science Communication & Society fundamentals, and an internship, for example in the area of Journalism, Museology or an agency for science communication and education.
  • Optional part: a master’s thesis and electives in communication. Courses in scientific communication can be taken at other universities (e.g. TU Delft, Wageningen UR or Vrije Universiteit).

“Natuurkunde vraagt vaardigheden die niet voor het oprapen liggen: je moet het leuk vinden om problemen op te lossen en wiskunde moet je aanstaan. Mijn ervaring is dat iedereen die natuurkunde studeert snel geboeid raakt door het vakgebied. Bijna alle afgestudeerde bachelors vervolgen hun opleiding met een master, waarop velen weer doorstromen in een PhD-track.

De Universiteit Leiden heeft een ijzersterke reputatie als onderzoeksuniversiteit. Twee natuurkundedocenten ontvingen de Spinozaprijs, de hoogst haalbare wetenschapsprijs in Nederland. Leiden is bovendien lid van de League of European Research Universities (LERU).

Wij beschouwen masterstudenten als buitengewoon bedreven onderzoekers. Studenten krijgen een eigen werkplek en spelen een volwaardige rol in de dagelijkse praktijk van wetenschapsbedrijving. Wat ik het meest waardeer in mijn werk is de samenwerking met studenten in een traditionele leermeester/pupil verhouding. Een student komt hier om te leren over wetenschappelijk onderzoek; ik ben de coach. Deze manier van werken past goed bij onze teams, die maximaal uit zes personen bestaan.

Als theoretisch natuurkundige houd ik ervan problemen te ontrafelen, maar vind ik het nog mooier wanneer studenten dat doen. Ik zie studenten opbloeien tot volleerde wetenschappers. Dit fascineert me en ik vind het bijzonder lonend. Al onze docenten zijn wetenschappers in hart en ziel, we nemen onze studenten zeer serieus.”
