Met de specialisatie Persian Studies in Leiden kies je voor de studie van Iraanse talen en culturen aan een universiteit met de meest gerenommeerde traditie in het westen op dit vakgebied. De klassieke en moderne Perzische literatuur wordt hier al bestudeerd sinds de oprichting van de universiteit, in de zestiende eeuw, en het onbetwiste hoogtepunt in de klassieke Perzische literatuur, Saadi’s rozentuin is hier vertaald.
Binnen de specialisatie kan je jezelf toeleggen op één van de verschillende onderwerpen of regio’s.
Programme
As a multidisciplinary programme spread over two semesters, you will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of topics covering Iran, Turkey, the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia.
Semester 1
Students will have to take three courses during the first semester of which one will be taken jointly with students of other departments. You will then select two other courses from the Persian Studies specialisation.
Semester 2
You take the course Persian Literature outside Iran: A Literary History. Furthermore, you will be working on your master’s thesis. You will be guided throughout this process by your thesis adviser.

Objectives
The aim of the programme is to introduce you to the concepts and academic approaches current in Persian Studies, including various disciplines: linguistics, literature, history and social sciences. You will learn to use these concepts and approaches in researching and analysing source material in Persian. Your thesis work will give you the opportunity to apply these methods in your own research.
