Peace, Justice and Development (Advanced)

Peace, Justice and Development is a high-level one-year Advanced Studies specialisation at the internationally renowned Leiden Law School at Leiden University. The programme deals with the legal aspects of war and peace and the quest for justice.

War and peace

As a student of this programme, you will develop insights into and in-depth knowledge about the legal regulations war and peace, as well as the quest for justice (substantively and procedurally). You will also study the possibilities and mechanisms to strengthen the rule of law in international economic relations and to support a sound and sustainable development of the world economy.

International affairs

You will be taught by lecturers who have gained an international reputation in their field, both from the Leiden Law School and from the many international legal institutions and tribunals in The Hague. An important aim of our programme is to provide you with advanced knowledge and skills regarding inter-related areas of public international law which are of great importance in international affairs.
The objective of the Peace, Justice and Development specialisation is to provide students with advanced knowledge of, and skills in, various areas of public international law which attract considerable attention in international affairs and which are inter-related.

Tracks

From the academic year 2015-2016 onwards, we will be offering a new track in the PJD Specialization, composed of two new courses: Advanced International Dispute Settlement (with a focus on the ‘The Law and Politics of International Dispute Settlement’ ) and International Arbitration in Public International Law. This will provide you a broader degree of choice in the specialisation. The two new courses will provide a special focus on the role of dispute settlement in creating peace and justice (International Dispute Settlement Track), and will be offered in addition to the two existing courses on ‘International Economic Law and Sustainable Development’ and ‘Peacebuilding and Transitional Justice’ which are more focused on development and transitional justice. You can thus choose between the two existing courses or the new track.
