In deze specialisatie worden de manieren onderzocht waarop beelden, geluiden, objecten en meer abstracte vormen van ‘informatie’ percepties en ervaringen vormen.

This specialisation brings together subfields such as the Anthropology of Media, Visual Anthropology and Material Culture studies. It explores questions regarding the circulation of media, objects and technologies, the economic and political infrastructures and conditions thereof, their inflection within everyday life worlds, and the ideological understandings of diverse forms and processes that turn them into one thing in one place and something different in another. We are interested in the ways in which images, sounds, objects, and more abstract forms of ‘information’ circulate and shape perception and experience.

How do media form part and parcel of social movements and cultural and political practice, including that of today’s heritage politics? What role do new, allegedly democratizing, media technologies play in providing access to some while excluding others? What kind of ‘worlds’ are conjured via commodity displays in malls, museums and on internet sites? Of interest, too, are the publics called forth by diverse mediations as well as the constraints—ideological, cultural, political, economic, financial, governmental, technological—that contour the possibilities and effects of such forms in particular places and times.

It is also possible to complete ‘Media, Visual and Material Culture’ by means of a specialisation in museum studies in collaboration with the Museum of Ethnology and the Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. (This track can only be followed if one starts with the programme in September).

“Ons masterprogramma Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology is vooral een wetenschappelijk programma. Na een inleiding op MA-niveau in theorie en praktijk van etnografie (ofwel, hoe men onderzoek doet naar grote en belangrijke onderwerpen in kleinschalige omgevingen), kunnen studenten één van de drie specialisaties kiezen: Environmental Anthropology and Development Sociology, Global Economy and Culture, and Media, Visual and Material Culture. ‘Global Economy and Culture’ is de meest algemene van de drie. Het belangrijkste thema daarbinnen zijn de kleinschalige uitingen van grootschalige instituties zoals globale markt, nationale staat en internationale organisaties, en de globale processen van handel en productie. ‘Media, Visual and Material Culture’ combineert visuele antropologie en de studie van materiele cultuur. De studenten krijgen de kans om te kiezen tussen de brede richting in visuele antropologie en de meer specifieke richting in museologie, welke wordt verzorgd in samenwerking met het Museum van Volkenkunde en het Museum van Oudheden te Leiden. Tenslotte, ‘Environmental Anthropology and Development Sociology’ concentreert zich op milieu-antropologie and de ontwikkelingssociologie en –antropologie.

Iedere specialisatie kan worden gecombineerd met etnografische film, mits de student op bachelorniveau voldoende training heeft gehad en met dit MA programma begint in september.

Het bestuderen van cultuur op straatniveau veronderstelt diepe en intieme kennis van een specifiek werelddeel. Leidse antropologen specialiseren zich al langer vooral in Zuidoost Azië en Afrika, maar begeleiden studenten ook bij onderzoek in andere delen van de wereld (vaak in samenspraak met collega-experts van andere instituten en faculteiten). De excellente reputatie van ons MA programma is vooral te danken aan die grondige kennis van specifieke regio’s. Praktisch veldonderzoek is een van de pilaren van onze MA en BA programma’s. Wij zijn er ook trots op dat we ons master-onderwijs en begeleiding zodanig met het veldonderzoek weten te combineren, dat studenten in staat zijn om binnen één jaar het programma af te ronden en een hoogstaand academische product afleveren.”
