De masterspecialisatie Mathematics and Education bestaat uit zowel een (engelstalige) wiskunde- als een (nederlandstalige) onderwijscomponent. Voor de wiskundecomponent maakt men een keuze uit een meer analyse- of een meer meetkunde/algebrageoriënteerde richting.
Bij de eerste richting moet men denken aan onderwerpen uit bijvoorbeeld dynamische systemen, kansrekening en stochastiek, wiskunde in de life sciences of differentiaalvergelijkingen en representatietheorie. Bij de tweede richting moet men denken aan onderwerpen uit bijvoorbeeld algebraïsche getaltheorie, algebraïsche meetkunde, algebraïsche topologie of cryptologie.
Programme
The mathematics component of the programme consists of a research project carried out in one of the research groups within the Leiden Mathematical Institute, including a master’s thesis and an oral presentation, and courses to be selected that correspond with the research topic. The choices for courses and research project will be made in consultation with a supervisor.
The education part of the programme (60 EC) is taught in Dutch. It is offered by the Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching (ICLON), and consists of the following components:
- Teaching Practice 30 EC
- Educational Theory 5 EC
- Supervision of Professional Development 7 EC
- Teaching Methodology 10 EC
- Specialisation 8 EC
For students attending the Education specialisation it is strongly recommended that the BSc programme has included the 10-EC-course Learning, Presentation and Communication, offered by the Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching (ICLON), or an equivalent course.
