Mathematics and Education

Mathematics and Education is a two-year master’s specialisation at Leiden University. This programme offers a unique combination of the in-depth study of mathematics and a thorough training in didactics and education.

Sound basis for employment

In the first year of the Mathematics and Education specialisation, you will focus on the study of mathematics (courses are taught in English). In the second year, you will be engaged in an education-oriented component (courses are taught in Dutch). Both components will provide you with a sound basis to find employment, not only in Dutch secondary education but also in a wider professional context.

In-depth mathematics study

In our mathematics component, you will study both analysis and number theory. Analysis is centred around two main research themes: probability, and secondly, computational science and dynamical systems, within the context of the interdisciplinary Biomathematics Group. Number theory is part of a broader programme including cryptology, algebra and geometry.

Theory and practice of teaching

The education component is offered by the renowned Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching, and combines training in mathematics with training in didactics and education. You will learn both the theory and practice of teaching, including a hands-on student training project at one of ICLON’s selected partner schools. After graduation, you will be a fully qualified first-degree teacher (eerstegraads bevoegdheid), equiped to work as a mathematics teacher in Dutch secondary education.
