De onderzoeksmaster Taalwetenschap wordt verzorgd door het Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL). Het gespecialiseerde programma is gestoeld op het actuele onderzoek van het instituut, dat alle gebieden beslaat van de hedendaagse taalwetenschap. Nergens anders in Nederland of de omliggende landen worden zoveel uiteenlopende talen onderwezen en bestudeerd, en als masterstudent Taalwetenschap profiteer je daarvan. Je hebt toegang tot onderzoeksprogramma’s met internationale faam, geleid door senior onderzoekers waarvan vele prestigieuze onderzoekssubsidies hebben verworven.
Na het afronden van de researchmaster ben je gekwalificeerd om te gaan werken als junior onderzoeker aan een onderzoeksinstituut of om te beginnen aan een promotieonderzoek.
Programme
In the first year, there are three obligatory courses:
Approaches to diversity
You will discuss a number of different approaches to diversity—including a component on the history of linguistics—and learn to find out about the rich variety and commonalities of the languages of the world.
Samples of linguistic structure: Analysis
This course consists of a presentation and discussion of the structural characteristics of several unrelated languages, and takes the form of intensive workshops taught by language specialists.
Samples of linguistic structure: Typology
In this course, languages—or language stages—exhibiting typological differences and similarities will be discussed from a cross-linguistic perspective. Led by an academic expert, you will explore the precise extent of these differences and similarities.
In addition to these required core courses you will follow tutorials and/or electives, which may involve specific languages. By the end of the first year, you will select a supervisor and a general thesis area. Your thesis, written in the fourth semester, will contain an original research project. If you opted for a certain theme, at least 40 ects of the optional courses as well as your thesis are theme-specific. Besides researching and writing the thesis, you will be able to contribute to an academic discussion based on your research results.
