Programme
The Science-Based Business (SBB) specialisation offers the opportunity to combine research training with business education with the emphasis on science-oriented activities and organisations. Through SBB, science students can form an opinion on and prepare for a career outside fundamental scientific research, or broaden their horizon and enhance their skills with a view to pursuing opportunities later in their research career.
The various elements of the specialisation are:
Science-Based Business courses
The course programme starts with a week of introductory lectures and a business game, followed by lectures, work groups and assignments in the areas of Strategic Marketing Management, Financial Management and Project Management, in addition to selected topics covering innovation management, legal affairs, intellectual property, negotiating, human resources management, organisational behaviour and business ethics.
For more information, see the website Life Science-Based Business Development
Compulsory advanced modules
Students have to present a paper and write a literature essay and have to choose two core courses. Two other core courses may to be chosen from the Leiden Chemistry programme or the Delft Life Science and Technology programme.
Electives
Electives can be chosen from courses from any science master’s course or from other master’s courses (permission required). In consultation with your mentor, any deficiencies in required prior knowledge can be compensated partly by the electives.
Master’s research project
A master’s research project can be carried out within one research group or divided into two smaller master’s research projects in separate or collaborating research groups. After discussion with the mentor, the master’s research project(s) can be expanded with a subject from the electives, or a second research project abroad or industry project can be carried out.
