De specialisatie Language and Communication geeft je de mogelijkheid de verschillende aspecten te bestuderen van taal als het meest gespecialiseerde communicatiemiddel voor mensen. Je hebt de kans om de rol van woorden, grammaticale constructies en teksten te bestuderen, en welke relatie die hebben met mensen en hun opvattingen, hun acties, en welke informatie ze delen, enzovoort.
Je leert de interactie van taal met cultuur en met communicatie-instellingen te onderzoeken, maar ook met andere media – niet enkel spreken en schrijven, maar ook via moderne media – en je bekijkt hoe taal daardoor verandert. We behandelen hoe kinderen taal leren door communicatie, en hoe ze zowel hun communicatieve als cognitieve capaciteiten ontwikkelen met behulp van taal.
De brede en diverse taalkundige expertise die in Leiden aanwezig is geeft je de unieke kans te ontdekken hoe verschillende talen – soms fundamenteel – verschillende communicatieinstrumenten bieden, afhankelijk van de verschillende culturele en sociale systemen.
