In de specialisatie Islam in the Contemporary West bestudeer je de wisselwerking tussen moslims en islam binnen islamitische minderheden in het Westen en de reacties die hierop ontstaan in de westerse samenleving. Je bestudeert deze verhoudingen vanuit verschillende invalshoeken: juridisch, politiek, theologisch en cultureel antropologisch. De docenten en onderzoekers die je in je onderzoek begeleiden, hebben veel kennis en ervaring binnen deze gebieden.


Je kunt je bijvoorbeeld bezighouden met de groeiende orthodoxe stroming onder moslims, waaronder de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe tak van islamitische jurisprudentie, de Fiqh al-Aqalliyyât. Op sociaal en politiek bestudeer je zowel de mate waarin moslims zich organiseren, als de vorming van de ‘islamitische’ identiteit. Daarnaast leg je je toe op juridische aspecten, zoals hoe moslims in toenemende mate proberen om delen van de Sharia toe te passen in wetgeving.

Programme

The programme is interdisciplinary and makes use of philology, history, and the social sciences (especially anthropology, sociology and psychology of religion). It is based on the most recent results of ongoing research into the development of Islam in the West.

    • Interpreting Islam: contemporary ijtihad in economics and biomedical ethics;
    • Islamic Jurisprudence for Muslims in Europe: The Role of Fatwas;
    • European policies and jurisprudence concerning Muslims and Islam or Piety, Modernity, and Gender in Islam: Anthropological Perspectives.
  3. Additional Courses. The MA requires several additional courses which can be in the field of Islam, Comparative Religion, Philosophy, Sociology or Psychology.
  4. MA thesis

You will in addition be given the opportunity to present and further develop your own interests in various discussions, papers and assignments.

Good knowledge of Islam is required. A good knowledge of Arabic is welcomed.
