In de specialisatie Islam in the Contemporary West bestudeer je de wisselwerking tussen moslims en islam binnen islamitische minderheden in het Westen en de reacties die hierop ontstaan in de westerse samenleving. Je bestudeert deze verhoudingen vanuit verschillende invalshoeken: juridisch, politiek, theologisch en cultureel antropologisch. De docenten en onderzoekers die je in je onderzoek begeleiden, hebben veel kennis en ervaring binnen deze gebieden.
Je kunt je bijvoorbeeld bezighouden met de groeiende orthodoxe stroming onder moslims, waaronder de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe tak van islamitische jurisprudentie, de Fiqh al-Aqalliyyât. Op sociaal en politiek bestudeer je zowel de mate waarin moslims zich organiseren, als de vorming van de ‘islamitische’ identiteit. Daarnaast leg je je toe op juridische aspecten, zoals hoe moslims in toenemende mate proberen om delen van de Sharia toe te passen in wetgeving.
Career
The master’s degree gives access to opportunities for pursuing a research-oriented career. Graduates often find employment as editors, journalists, policy advisors, counsellors or as teachers of religion or philosophy. Other career prospects include policy-making functions with regard to Islamic issues at ministries, embassies, or in the Immigration and Naturalisation Service. You may also become a teacher of Islam.
On completion of the master’s programme, Dutch-speaking students can follow a teacher education programme which leads to an upper secondary teaching qualification in Religion and Philosophy of Life.
