Als student van de specialisatie Geschiedenis van de filosofie reconstrueer je het gedachtengoed van filosofen uit het verleden, in de context van hun leven en de tijd waarin ze toen leefden. Je doet hiervoor een beroep op verschillende wetenschappelijke disciplines, zoals filologie, archeologie, wetenschapsgeschiedenis en de filosofie in hele breedte, om zo ver mogelijk te gaan in de reconstructie.
Deze complete onderdompeling in de aannames en redenaties van een andere filosoof is een waardevolle manier om inzicht te krijgen in ons verleden en onze huidige cultuur. Historisch bewustzijn en begrip zijn zelfs een noodzakelijke voorwaarde om in je in de 21ste eeuw als filosoof te kunnen handhaven.

The Leiden Institute for Philosophy offers a wide range of expertise in the history of philosophy, from antiquity to modern philosophy. In their MA classes, instructors present topics and new interpretations from their current research. Reading groups and intensive seminars with small groups provide the opportunity for MA students to discuss texts and topics of interest with staff members. The departmental colloquium series and the prestigious Zeno lectures hosted in conjunction with the Philosophy Department at Utrecht enable them to hear and discuss presentations by visiting speakers.
