De specialisatie English Language and Linguistics biedt de mogelijkheid tot het bestuderen van veel verschillende onderwerpen waarbij vragen centraal staan zoals hoe mensen elkaar beïnvloeden en wat de echte functie van taal is. Je houdt je tijdens het programma bezig met de toepassing van verschillende onderdelen van taalkundige theorieën op de Engelse taal, in het bijzonder op vroege fases zoals het Oud en Middel Engels. Maar ook Vroeg en Laat Moderne Engels komen aan bod.
Het programma omvat theoretische, toegepaste, historische en socio-historische taalkunde. Het is gebaseerd op lopend taalkundig onderzoek dat wordt verricht aan het Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), een van Nederlandse grootste taalkundige instituten. Je profiteert van de expertise van de beste onderzoekers op het gebied van Engelse taalkunde op het Europese vaste land.
Programme
During the one-year programme, you gain in-depth and practical knowledge on how to use language for various purposes, such as to persuade, to write academically, or to entertain. You will accomplish this by taking part in a variety of compulsory and optional courses, such as translation studies (a course within the translation specialisation), or sociolinguistics, that focuses on the impact of society on language and describes language variation and change. In our seminars on topics such as phonology, syntax, morphology, and psycholinguistics, you study the origins of language by means of analyzing speech sounds, word structure, and sentence structure.
The only compulsory element in the programme is the master thesis.
