The MA specialisation in English Language and Linguistics offers a wide array of topics, centering on issues related to such questions as how language and people influence each other, and what the real function of language is. You will deal with the application of various aspects of linguistic theory to the description of the facts of English, with a particular emphasis on earlier stages of the language, such as Old and Middle English. The programme covers theoretical, applied, historical and socio-historical linguistics. The programme builds on actual linguistic research carried out at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), one of the largest linguistics institutes in the Netherlands, and you will benefit from the expertise of continental Europe’s finest English scholars.

Courses are offered in phonology and syntax, as well as in socio-historical linguistics and morphology. If you are interested in courses of a more applied nature, you can choose from a range of subjects such as lexicography, the language of affects, and the sociolinguistics of English. You will be able to apply and further refine the linguistic research methods and skills that you have acquired during the BA.

“Een van de mooie kanten van de master English Language and Culture is dat je, ondanks dat er door de eeuwen heen al zo veel is onderzocht, nog steeds gestimuleerd wordt om op zoek te gaan naar nieuwe invalshoeken op dat ene werk of naar mogelijke verbanden met andere werken buiten het vakgebied. Het is dan ook echt een uitdaging om met iets te komen waarvan ook de docent denkt dat het ergens hout snijdt (en wat nog niet of nauwelijks onderzocht is). Iets wat je vervolgens kunt gebruiken als basis voor een onderzoeksvraag voor een paper.

Een ander groot pluspunt van deze opleiding is het zeer open karakter. Er is veel ruimte voor eigen input in de colleges. Je wordt erg gestimuleerd om zelfstandig aan de slag te gaan met het opgegeven materiaal, maar ook om je eigen weg te vinden tussen alle publicaties binnen het vakgebied van jouw keuze. Dit laatste vind ik erg fijn. Sommige gebieden zijn erg breed en lang niet alles daarvan spreekt je even veel aan. Doordat je jezelf kunt richten op het gedeelte dat jij het meest interessant vindt, maak je je studie een stuk persoonlijker.

Het is heerlijk om te werken met docenten die hun vakgebied tot in de puntjes verstaan. Ze zijn altijd op de hoogte van de laatste ontwikkelingen binnen hun vakgebied en staan open voor vragen. Ook zijn ze altijd bereid om je op weg te helpen met het zoeken naar een uitgebreider antwoord op je vraag, mocht je het gegeven antwoord niet bevredigend genoeg vinden.”
