In de masteropleiding Education and Child Studies kies je een specialisatie in één van de deeldisciplines van de pedagogische wetenschappen. In alle specialisaties staat de wetenschappelijke vorming van studenten voorop.

The Master’s programme in Education and Child Studies is an academic programme that focuses on the link between theory, research and practice. Students are taught to seek evidence-based solutions to problems occurring in child-rearing and education. Students choose a specialisation from the start. All specialisations have one course in common, a course on the practice of empirical research. The rest of the year is spent deepening the students’ scientific knowledge in the field of their choice, doing an internship and completing a master’s project in which students carry out their own research and prepare a written report of their research project.

You can choose from the following specialisations:

  1. Applied Neuroscience in Education and Child Studies
    For those interested in the relation between neuro-cognitive and biological factors, and learning, behaviour and emotions.
  2. Child and Family Studies
    For those wishing to specialise in the development of children within their family and day-care facilities.
  3. Clinical Child and Adolescents Studies
    This master’s specialisation focuses on severe developmental and behavioural problems in children and adolescents.
  4. Coach for Learning and Development
    For students who wish to work in secondary education to coach the teachers who guide pupils with learning and behavioural problems.
  5. Educational Studies
    This specialisation is dedicated to the factors that influence the process of learning, reading, and arithmetic in school pupils.
  6. Learning Problems and Impairments
    In this specialisation you will learn to recognise and treat many common learning problems.

“Leiden is specialist op het gebied van onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van adoptiekinderen. Ik bekleed de leerstoel adoptie, momenteel de enige in de wereld. Het onderzoek dat wij doen is niet alleen in het belang van de adoptiekinderen en hun ouders. Door de eerste jaren van een adoptiekind te vergelijken met die van een kind dat bij zijn eigen ouders opgroeit, krijg je inzicht in het nature-nurture-aspect: welk gedrag is aangeleerd en welk is aangeboren? Ons onderzoek laat zien welke invloed de eerste kinderjaren hebben op de ontwikkeling van een kind. Daarnaast voeren we meta-analyses uit op grond van een databank met enige honderden empirische onderzoeken.

Op grond hiervan kunnen we evidence based adviezen geven. We sturen onze studenten in de master ook op pad om zelf onderzoek te gaan doen, bijvoorbeeld in een kinderhuis in India. Eén van onze meest bijzondere projecten is een longitudinaal onderzoek, gefinancierd door NWO, waarin wij buitenlandse adoptiekinderen van baby tot adolescent volgen. We betrekken onze master-studenten ook bij het onderzoek.

Vanwege ons specialisme staan we in voortdurende internationale belangstelling. We werken veel met buitenlandse universiteiten samen. Pas kwam een Amerikaanse professor met zijn studenten voor een kort bezoek naar Leiden. Dat is erg leuk voor onze studenten.”
