This specialisation combines a broad basis in modern statistics with state-of-the-art knowledge in Data Science. Key words are Data Mining, Machine Learning, Networks, Pattern Recognition, and Deep Learning
The MSc specialisation Data Science for Statistical Science equips students with a broad basis in statistics combined with state-of-the-art knowledge in Data Science through collaboration between the Mathematical Institute and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science. Some of the key words are Databases, Advances in Data Mining, Networks, Pattern Recognition, and Deep Learning.
Students will gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of statistical models, especially in relation to Data Science, including their application and interpretation in a broad range of empirical research. They are able to critically study scientific research and develop new models and techniques.
Students learn practical skills such as statistical programming, statistical consultation, database management and written and oral presentation of analysis and research results.
The Data Science for Statistical Science program shares a common core with the Statistical Science for the Life and Behavioural Sciences specialisation, both leading to the same Master of Science degree.
This Statistical Science for the Life and Behavioural Sciences master is organised jointly by groups at different institutes and universities:
• Mathematical Institute, Leiden University
• Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Leiden University
• Department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics, Leiden University Medical Center
• Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science
• Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, VU Medical Center
• Biometris – Applied Statistics, Wageningen University and Research centre
Together these institutes have expertise in a wide area of statistical science and its applications, both practical and theoretical. Many of the scientific staff members are involved in other educational tasks, or are specialised in research and statistical consultation.
In addition a similar Data Science option is offered at the LIACS for Computer Science master students interested in the role of statistics.
One of the highlights of both these Data Science specialisations is the course “Introduction to Data Science”, in which both student groups meet for interesting field trips, programming assignments, lectures and guest speakers.
