De masteropleiding Comparative Indo-European Linguistics behandelt de studie en het vergelijk van een groot aantal aan elkaar gerelateerde talen in Europa en Azië.
De opleiding biedt je een binnen Nederland uniek en inspirerend studieprogramma. Niet alleen is dit de enige opleiding in zijn soort in het land, je bent tevens in de gelegenheid om talen te bestuderen die niet gedoceerd worden bij enig ander Nederlands instituut, zoals Armeens, Albanees, Avestisch en Litouws.
Studenten die Indo-Europese talen willen combineren met een dieptestudie in een taal of een groep talen kunnen hun voordeel halen uit de vele talen die aangeboden worden door de Faculteit der Geesteswetenschappen, zoals Indologie, Klassieke Talen, Slavisch, Perzisch en talen van het Oude Nabije Oosten.

Programme
You are free to make your own selection of courses, although at least 30 ECTS must be devoted to language courses and auxiliary subjects. For each language or language group selected, you must focus on one or more related languages. For example, for the study of Celtic, some knowledge of Old Irish, Welsh, Breton, Gallic and Celtiberic is required. If Leiden can’t offer you the required expertise for the individual curricula, you can follow language courses with sister institutions in the Netherlands or abroad. For the supporting courses, you may choose from various courses that are offered as part of, amongst others, the MPhil (Research Master’s) programme in Linguistics.
Examples include:
- The Master’s class ‘Approaches to Diversity’, in which four major linguistic research traditions are compared.
- The Master’s class ‘Samples of Linguistic Structure II: Typology’, in which phonological, syntactic, lexicological and grammatical characteristics of various languages are analysed by experts in the languages in question.
