In de specialisatie Classics bestudeer je de op multidisciplinaire wijze de Griekse en Romeinse wereld, inclusief Latijnse literatuur uit de moderne periode, antieke wijsbegeerte en oude geschiedenis. Het onderzoek naar klassieke talen en culturenen, in bijzonder Grieks, staat in Leiden op een hoog niveau.
Na het afronden van de tweejarige researchmaster ben je gekwalificeerd om te werken als junior onderzoeker of om te beginnen aan een promotieonderzoek. De researchmaster is ook een goede voorbereiding voor functies buiten de academische wereld waar onderzoeksvaardigheden en -ervaring erg belangrijk zijn.
Career
As a graduate of a two-year research master’s degree you are qualified to work as a junior academic researcher in an academic environment or carry out further research work on a PhD programme. Those not wishing to pursue an academic career might consider a position for which an academic level of thinking and working is required. Away from academia, career options open to you include working within the fields of publishing or teaching, at policy-making departments of governmental bodies, within the education sector, or within cultural tourism.
With more than fifty percent of Classics’ graduates from Leiden moving into education, you will be in good company if you seek out a career in teaching. You will be qualified to take the teacher-training programme at the ICLON Graduate School of Education, leading to a teaching qualification in Greek, Latin and Classic Cultural Studies for Dutch upper-secondary schools. You have to speak fluent Dutch to follow the course, and there are some additional entry requirements.
