Chinese Studies

The two-year Master’s in Asian Studies specialisation Chinese Studies at Leiden University combines content courses with intensive and advanced language training – a programme that is unique to the Netherlands in terms of the world-class resources it offers and the quality of teaching provided.

During the programme you will acquire an excellent command of Mandarin (and, in the case of certain specialisations, of Classical Chinese), a deep understanding of the country’s internal and external dynamics, and a starting point for contextualising China within Asia.

Choose Chinese Studies at Leiden University:

  • Gain access to the resources of the world-renowned Leiden sinological library, home to one of the largest and most diverse collections in Chinese in Europe and an important reference point for scholars around the world, covering art and material culture, cultural/intellectual/social/economic history language; literature and film; media and communication; philosophy; political science; and religion.
  • Immerse yourself in Chinese culture and experience it first hand with a one-year immersion at Shandong university.
  • Learn from internationally-recognised experts in fields ranging from political science to literature and religion, as well as experienced teachers of Chinese as a foreign language.
  • Develop a broad knowledge of China, and the ability to comment on it from other vantage points – for example, western Europe – for both specialist and general audiences.
  • Gain an understanding of disciplinary thinking, concepts, terminology and methodology as dictated by your regional-disciplinary specialisation and acquire the skills to carry out independent and academic-quality research.

It is also possible to focus on Chinese Studies as part of the two-year Research Master’s programme Asian Studies and the one-year East Asian Studies programme. The two-year Chinese Studies programme has a maximum of 30 places ; the Admissions Board ranks the requests on the fulfilment of the Entry Requirements. East Asian Studies and the Research Master’s have no restriction on the number of available places.

One of the main objectives of the two-year programme Chinese Studies is to enhance Chinese language proficiency. We strongly advise native speakers to apply for the Research Master’s programme or the specialisations History, Arts and Culture or Politics, Society and Economy.
