De masteropleiding Book and Digital Media Studies houdt zich bezig met het dynamisch proces van kennis en informatieoverdracht in analoge (druk) en elektronische (internet) media. Je bestudeert zowel de historische ontwikkeling – van Gutenberg tot Gates – als de moderne praktijk van de tekstuele communicatie in hun maatschappelijke en technologsche context. Veel aandacht wordt besteed aan de ingrijpende consequenties van de digitale revolutie voor de wereld van het boek.


Het programma kent drie specialisaties:
  • boekgeschiedenis
  • digitale ontsluiting van cultureel erfgoed
  • moderne uitgever

Het unieke karakter van het MA programma trekt studenten aan van over de hele wereld.

The programme is the only one of its kind in the Netherlands and covers the entire history and present practice of textual transmission from manuscript to the Internet. Following this programme will give you access to a number of unique facilities, including:

  • The University Library
  • The seventeenth-century Bibliotheca Thysiana
  • The Academic Press Leiden’s ‘Press Room’—with letter-press printing and electronic prepress
  • The library of the Koninklijke Vereniging van het Boekenvak (Royal Dutch Book Trade Association) in Amsterdam
  • You will also benefit from the expertise of specialists within such institutions as the Leiden University Library and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (the national library of the Netherlands) in The Hague.

Objectives
The aim of the programme is to ensure you have an in-depth knowledge of the history and modern practice of text transmission—manuscripts, printing and recent digital developments­. You will also graduate with detailed knowledge of all relevant issues and academic skills and insights regarding the field of book studies.
