The Biomedical Sciences Research specialisation aims to provide you with a theoretical background and with general academic competences in multidisciplinary research in Biomedical Sciences. You will be trained to become an independent researcher, with a further career in science. Either with a view to obtaining a PhD degree, or to fill a position in an industrial or institutional research environment.
Programme
The common part of the programme for all students of MSc Biomedical Sciences consists of:
- A 20-week research traineeship in a laboratory;
- A number of theoretical and thematic (Frontiers of Science) courses;
- A course on how to write a research proposal;
- A course on clinical research in practice;
- A course on scientific conduct.
In addition, the Research specialisation further prepares you for a career as a biomedical researcher. You will, for example, take a course in Laboratory Animal Science and you will conduct a second major research project of about 28 weeks, either at Leiden University Medical Center or elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad.
In total, you will spend two years (120 EC) on state of the art biomedical courses and a great deal on doing research yourself. You define your own fields of interest in courses and research projects, but are requested to train yourself in a broad spectrum of biomedical topics and techniques.
Still, the Research Specialisation of the Master’s Programme in Biomedical Sciences allows you to focus to a certain extent on a specific scientific area. For those interested in Epidemiology or Neurosciences, such focus is offered in specific tracks on these subjects.
