De masterspecialisatie Biology and Education combineert eenjarig biologie onderzoek met een eenjarige lerarenopleiding. Deze specialisatie voldoet aan de eisen om een eerstegraads lesbevoegdheid in biologie de ontvangen, die je nodig hebt om les te geven op middelbare scholen in Nederland.

The Leiden MSc in Biology provides ample opportunities for students interested in molecular biosciences or in evolution, biodiversity and conservation.
The Institute of Biology at Leiden University has top research specialisations in evolutionary and molecular biology, while the Institute of Environmental Sciences specialises in research on conservation and sustainability.
The availability of extensive invaluable biodiversity collections in the National Herbarium of the Netherlands, the famous Hortus botanicus, and the popular National Museum of Natural History Naturalis contribute to an excellent environment for biologists in Leiden. Biology in Leiden is part of the Faculty of Science providing ample opportunities for crossing borders with other science areas. Furthermore, the close proximity of the Bio Science Park with its many companies active in the (bio)medical field and the collaborations with the Leiden University Medical Center enhance the study possibilities enormously.

The Biology and Education specialisation comprises a one-year biology research component and a one-year education component. It combines research training in biology (taught in English) with a second year training in education (taught in Dutch). Successful completion of this programme leads to the so-called ‘eerstegraads lesbevoegdheid’ (the Dutch High School Teaching Certificate).

“Ik ben erg blij met het nieuwe Msc programma, dat in lijn is gebracht met onze onderzoekspraktijk. De opleiding concentreert zich op wat ik beschouw als twee van de meest uitdagende en fascinerende onderwerpen in de biologie: de processen die ten grondslag liggen aan evolutie en biodiversiteit, en het functioneren van moleculaire machinerie van levende cellen. De ontwikkelingen in de moderne biologie zijn overigens zo dat deze thema’s gekenmerkt worden door veel dwarsverbanden. We doen onderzoek met behulp van een verscheidenheid aan modelorganismen en state-of-the-art onderzoekstechnieken, want beide onderwerpen vereisen multidisciplinair onderzoek. In Leiden hebben wij het privilege deze dingen te doen in een unieke samenwerking met verschillende onderzoeksinstituten.

In het bijzonder is het interessant dat fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek vaak wordt gecombineerd met onderzoek dat, bijvoorbeeld, medische of commerciële doelen dient, of problemen aan de kaak stelt die belangrijk zijn voor onze maatschappij of onze steeds veranderende wereld. Door dit alles, in combinatie met de nieuwste onderzoeksfaciliteiten in deze velden, kunnen wij studenten een uitstekende, brede opleiding bieden waarin theoretische vakken hand in hand gaan met individuele, vooruitstrevende onderzoeksprojecten.
