De MA Art History in Leiden is uniek in Nederland in haar interdisciplinaire aanbod en een diversiteit aan keuzetrajecten. Je kijkt naar moderne kunst en design als schakels tussen media, culturen en gemeenschappen; maar ook naar de manieren waarop beeldhouwkunst, architectuur en beeldende kunst samen werden ingezet in de Renaissance en Barok om de toeschouwer te overtuigen.


Niet alleen het kunstwerk staat centraal, ook de rol van de opdrachtgever en de reacties van het publiek. Een verbindend thema is dan ook de uitwerking van kunstwerken op de beschouwers en de manieren waarop het medium van kunstwerken daaraan bijdraagt. Door deze brede benadering leer je verschillende methoden kennen en kun je in gesprek gaan met andere disciplines zoals antropologie, natuurwetenschap, theologie, gender- en internationalisatiestudies.

  1. This MA programme is unique in that it studies a substantial body of works of art, buildings and material culture from the early Middle Ages until the present day, and that these fields of specialisation are approached from a comparative perspective. The programme aims at an in-depth knowledge of relevant cultural contexts, of the response to art, architecture and design, and the concepts and competences used in these, as well as of intellectual ideas, literature, and social norms and values.
  2. The university is connected to and located near a network of major institutes and collections, providing our students with access to important primary sources which are used to inves-tigate the broader relationship between art, material culture and intellectual history. These institutes include: the National Museum of Ethnology; the Natural History Museum; the Museum for the History of Science; the National Museum of Antiquities; the Leiden University Library Special Collections; Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal/Scheltema, location for contemporary art.
  3. Art history in Leiden studies the visual arts (including photography and new developments such as the relationship between art and science) as well as architecture and the urban environment, decorative arts and domestic culture, both past and present, and their interrelationships.
  4. Students in the History of Art and Material Culture of East Asia and of South and Southeast Asia specialisation have access to unique collections in Leiden of Chinese and Japanese objects of art and material culture, as well as other artefacts and primary (textual) sources.

“Wij leren studenten om kunst op een frisse manier te bekijken en bij zichzelf na te gaan: wat is mijn eigen concept van kunst? We kunnen niet zonder meer onze Westerse concepten van kunst plakken op werken uit andere werelddelen. Internationale kunstgeschiedenis bestaat niet slechts uit Europese en Amerikaanse kunst. Het basisprincipe van World Art Studies is dat kunstgeschiedenis een benadering van kunst van over de hele wereld is. Juist daarom kiezen wij een allesomvattend en vergelijkend perspectief. We vergelijken bijvoorbeeld Westerse kunst met Aziatische. Dit mondiale aspect is een ‘must’ in de hedendaagse wereld van de enorme rijkdom aan kunstproductie. Bovendien wìllen studenten ook weten hoe Westerse kunst gerelateerd is aan andere tradities. Ook wetenschap speelt een belangrijke rol in ons masterprogramma.

In de hedendaagse, steeds veranderende wereld van kunst, is ruimte voor vele nieuwe vormen en concepten. Kunstenaars kaarten problemen aan als: tot op welke hoogte kan men worden gevormd en zij zorgen ervoor dat wij anders aankijken tegen politieke en ethische vraagstukken. Wat zegt kunst over de tijd waarin wij leven? We nemen in de master ook de verschillende unieke collecties van Leidse musea in acht, van Naturalis en Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal, tot de Universiteitsbibliotheek met haar speciale collecties. Voor ons is de hechte band tussen kunst, wetenschap en materiële cultuur de sleutel tot de studie van kunstgeschiedenis. We leggen constant dwarsverbanden.”
