Architecture is een specialisatie in de MA Arts and Culture. In deze specialisatie bestudeer je architectuurgeschiedenis niet alleen vanuit de invalshoek van de architecten, hun ontwerpen en de manier waarop hun werk is uitgevoerd. De focus ligt ook op hun opdrachtgevers, het publiek en hoe dit op architectuur en de gebouwde omgeving reageert.
Centrale thema’s zijn:
- de Italiaanse Barok
- uitwisselingen tussen Italië en de Lage Landen in de periode 1500-1750
- alternatieve architectuurdiscoursen in de 20ste eeuw, van regionalisme en traditionalisme tot neo-Barok
- architectuurtheorie, waarbij gedachtevorming over de impact van gebouwen op het publiek centraal staat, zoals in de klassieke retorica of het sublieme
In Leiden bestudeer je deze thema’s in nauwe samenwerking met Oude Beeldende Kunst en de Nederlandse Instituten in Rome en Florence. Excursies vormen een vast onderdeel van het programma.
Entry requirements
- BA degree in Art History or a closely related discipline from an accredited university
- A good command of English as demonstrated by IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL570/230/88-90, evidenced by an appropriate test.
This requirement does not apply if you have:- completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
- an International Baccalaureate, or
- a Dutch VWO diploma.
Students who have a BA in Art History from Leiden University do not have to apply for admission.
Students with a university bachelor’s degree that is not in Art History may apply for the pre-master’s programme.
Applicants with a higher professional education (HBO) degree are not eligible for admission.
