De researchmaster Archeologie is gebaseerd op de belangrijkste archeologische onderzoeksgebieden van de Universiteit Leiden. De kern van het programma is georganiseerd rond het excellente onderzoek waarmee Leiden internationaal naam heeft gemaakt. De onderzoeksmaster is een tweejarige opleiding op hoog niveau. De master onderscheidt zichzelf van de reguliere masteropleiding omdat het de student betrekt in interdisciplinair onderzoek van topkwaliteit met een nadruk op het verwerven van onderzoeksvaardigheden. Methodologische, theoretische en wetenschappelijk-filosofische aspecten zullen worden benadrukt binnen het algemene deel van de onderzoeksmaster.
Research/PhD
A few master’s students can become eligible for a research master’s programme in preparation for a possible PhD research position. Strict selection criteria apply here. Apart from carrying out their own research, PhD students are expected to follow the education programme of a research school such as the Research School Websifor Archaeology (ARCHON) or CNWS. They also have modest teaching obligations, such as being in charge of a seminar based on their own research project.
The research master’s programme in Archaeology focuses on the research areas that are strongly represented in Leiden. The heart of the programme is organised around the excellent research with which Leiden has made a name for itself internationally.
There are four different tracks, centred on four research projects that reflect the broad spectrum of research undertaken within the department:
- Human Origins
- Prehistoric Farming Communities in North-Western Europe
- Town and Country in the Mediterranean Region and the Near East
- Religion and Society in Native American Cultures
The programme distinguishes itself from the regular Master of Arts courses in that it engages the student in top quality interdisciplinary research and emphasises the acquisition of research skills. Methodological, theoretical and scientific-philosophical aspects will be highlighted within the general, communal part of the Research Master programme.
Within the specialisations, courses are aimed at the intensification and broadening of the knowledge base and the development of research and publication skills. Research Master students are stimulated to visit international conferences, contribute to international workshops within the department and abroad, and to take courses outside the department at related (international) institutions.
