De tweejarige onderzoeksmaster African Studies is uniek in Nederland. De opleiding overbrugt de – kunstmatige – scheidslijn tussen de geesteswetenschappen en de sociale wetenschappen. Hierdoor kun je je verdiepen in veel verschillende aspecten van het Afrikaanse continent en ontwikkel je kennis en vaardigheden die niet gebonden zijn aan de traditionele grenzen van de disciplines.
Als student van deze onderzoeksmaster specialiseer je je in een bepaald thema én een bepaalde regio van Afrika. Daarbij houd je een breed perspectief om je specialisatie in de relevante context te kunnen plaatsen. Deze combinatie is van groot belang om door te kunnen gaan in een promotieonderzoek.
De master is een gemeenschappelijk programma van het Afrika-Studiecentrum en de Universiteit Leiden.
Na het afronden van de researchmaster ben je gekwalificeerd om te gaan werken als junior onderzoeker aan een onderzoeksinstituut of om te beginnen aan een promotieonderzoek.
Entry requirements
- A BA degree in anthropology, art history, comparative literature, development studies, economics, geography, history, political and international relations, or sociology, with a specialisation on Africa, or have a first degree in African Studies.
- Students with degrees in medicine and health, law, linguistics or other relevant disciplines can only be admitted if, in addition to an interest in Africa, appropriate knowledge of (some of) the methods and theories in the above-mentioned fields can be demonstrated.
- The prime requirement is for a proven affinity with and ability for scholarly research.
- A good command of English as demonstrated by IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL570/230/88-90, evidenced by an appropriate test .
This requirement does not apply if you have:- completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
- an International Baccalaureate, or
- a Dutch VWO diploma
