Pre-Sessional English Course for Law Students
Applicants who apply for the English-language LL.M. programmes or the LL.M. Advanced Studies programmes may benefit from attending the pre-sessional English classes offered by Leiden Law School and the Leiden Language Centre.
Students who do not meet the required language level for the LL.M. programme (minimum score required: IELTS 7.0 or internet based Toefl 100) will be offered the opportunity to bring their English up to the required entry level by attending either an 8 or a 4-week English course. The course is especially designed to fast track applicants who have IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 (or equivalent Toefl) to the required English level.
Your study programme will be extended by a maximum of 12 ECTS with the addition of English language classes (IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 to IELTS 7.0 level courses) to be held at the Leiden University Language Centre.
Note: this offer is open only to applicants with IELTS 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0.
IELTS 6.5 and 6.0 are equivalent to:
- Toefl paper based 575 or 550
- Toefl computer based 232 or 213
- Toefl internet based 90 – 91 or 79 – 80
Start date of the pre-sessional classes:
- Monday 2 July 2012 for applicants who have an IELTS score of 6.0
- Wednesday 1 August 2012 for applicants who have an IELTS score of 6.5
Both courses will be completed on Wednesday 29 August 2012, so that you can participate in the international welcome activities organised by the university just before the start of the academic year.
Pre-sessional English programme fees 2012-2013
The pre-sessional English classes require an additional fee in addition to the standard tuition fee, with an additional cost of approximately € 50 for the required reading materials.
| Eight-week course (entry level IELTS 6.0) | € 2,200 |
| Four-week course (entry level IELTS 6.5) | € 1,100 |
Student accommodation during pre-sessional English classes
The university housing office can assist pre-sessional English class students in finding accommodation. Students need simply inform the housing office that they are following pre-sessional English classes and require accommodation from an earlier date.
Student housing contracts can be issued for a maximum duration of twelve months. Consequently, students following pre-sessional English classes will be asked to sign a housing contract for the duration of their master’s programme only. For the duration of their pre-sessional English classes Leiden Law School will be the housing contract holder. Students will however remain liable for rental payment and will be requested to pay the rent for the whole period of their pre-sessional English classes in advance. Accommodation during both the presessional English classes and master’s programme will be at the same address.
Pre-sessional courses on a voluntary basis
Applicants who already meet the required English language test score can also benefit from attending the pre-sessional courses on a voluntary basis. If you are interested in attending these courses, please send an e-mail to s.bruce@law.leidenuniv.nl.
